Children and young people (and their families) may need extra support if they are finding it difficult to deal with or understand their emotions and/or behaviour. Counselling provides an opportunity for children to talk, in confidence, about things that are worrying them or affecting their day to day life. Schools often provide professionals to help young people and their families, such as learning or behaviour mentors, family liaison officers or professionals from external services. However, some children and young people, or their families, may decide to seek further help in the form of counselling. Counsellors are trained to listen without judging and to help children sort out their thoughts and feelings.
For your child to talk openly they need to feel safe and comfortable with the counsellor they are working with. We offer a free consultation with our therapists to ensure that your child finds someone they are happy to work with. Our counsellors tailor sessions according to each child's needs, in an age-appropriate way.
“I have seen hundreds of children over my 15 years as a counsellor who have had negative experiences within past therapy, therefore we do our best to help achieve the positive outcome needed”. (Sam who runs Mindworks Counselling Sevices)
Our therapists are separately qualified to counsel children. Always check when looking for a therapist that they are trained in counselling children. If a counsellor is not experienced in this field more problems can arise
The most helpful thing a parent/carer can do is show an acceptance of counselling as a normal and useful activity, and to show an interest if their son/daughter wishes to talk about it, but not to press them if they don’t. We acknowledge that this isn’t an easy task, but our aim is to help your child recover and achieve a positive outcome so we have to support them in the best way possible.
