Anger Management

We all know what anger is, and we've all felt it: whether as a fleeting annoyance or as full-fledged rage. Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you're at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion

Anger can be caused by both external and internal events. You could be angry at a specific person (such as a co-worker or supervisor) or event (a traffic jam, a cancelled flight), or your anger could be caused by worrying or brooding about your personal problems. Memories of traumatic or enraging events can also trigger angry feelings. Often, anger problems are due to poor management of our emotions. Anger, like all emotions, involves physiological and chemical changes in the body - affecting heart rate and adrenaline levels. For some people these surges can become addictive and destructive. There is a fine line between acknowledging anger and venting it until it is out of control. Remind yourself that getting angry is not going to fix anything, that it won't make you feel better (and may actually make you feel worse).

The goal of Anger management therapy is designed to help individuals learn how to control their anger more effectively and lessen the impact their anger problems are having on their lives. It may help not only those individuals experiencing anger issues, but also the people who make up their social network. Uncontrollable anger may lead to harmful psychological and physical conditions. By reducing and controlling anger, an individual can reduce stress and significantly lower the risk for serious health problems, including heart disease and high blood pressure. The goal of anger management therapy is to teach people how to accurately examine their triggers, adjust their perception of situations, and develop healthy, constructive ways in which to express anger and frustrations. You can't get rid of, or avoid, the things or the people that enrage you, nor can you change them, but you can learn to control your reactions.

Techniques Used in Anger Management Therapy Include:

  • Impulse control
  • Self-awareness
  • Meditation
  • Frustration management
  • Breathing techniques
  • Relaxation strategies
