Providing Professional Drug Addiction Treatment in Chester Liverpool & Wirral

Drug Addiction

Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a dependence on a legal or illegal drug or medication. Some people are able to use recreational or prescription drugs without ever experiencing negative consequences or addiction. For many others, though, substance use can cause problems at work, home, school, and in relationships, leaving you feeling isolated, helpless, or ashamed. Maybe your reading this for yourself or for a loved one but more importantly you are reading this, therefore you have taken a huge step in the recovery process. In acknowledging there is a problem , you are also saying I can’t stop doing this alone. Maybe you have had numerous attempts to stop using drugs before only to relapse

Common Addictive Drugs

  • Cocaine
  • Heroin
  • Cannabis
  • MDMA
  • Hallucinogens
  • Tobacco
  • Inhalants

In reality, drug addiction is very complex, and quitting takes more than good intentions or a strong will. In fact, because drugs change the brain in ways that foster compulsive drug abuse, quitting is difficult, even for those who are ready to do so.

Many patients we see have tried for years to eliminate the addiction but with minimal success or very short term success. Research to date shows that counselling and a positive treatment plan is the best way to ensure success for most patients. Treatment approaches that are tailored to each patient’s drug abuse patterns and any co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social problems can lead to sustained recovery and a life without drug abuse. The most successful treatment approach that the therapists within our clinic use combined with other treatments appears to be CBT.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy -- or CBT –is about understanding and providing insights as to why a person abuses drugs or alcohol in the first place. CBT teaches a person how to recognize moods, thoughts, and situations that cause drug craving. A therapist helps the person avoid these triggers, and replace negative thoughts and feelings with ones that are healthier..

Specific focus of CBT treatment include:

  • Exploring the positive and negative consequence of continued drug use
  • Self-monitoring to recognise cravings early
  • Identify situations that may put one at risk for using drugs
  • Develop strategies for coping with cravings &avoiding these high risk situations

The skills learned in cognitive behavioural therapy can last a lifetime, making it a potentially powerful method of drug abuse treatment. All our therapists are highly trained in this field with vast experience of drug dependency.
